Do you want to relax and enjoy a natural environment? Hampshire Hotel – Avenarius is located in the Gelderse Achterhoek, near the charming village of Ruurlo. This region full of forests is one of the most beautiful areas in the Netherlands and is an ideal base for cycling and walking tours. Between the estates, small rivers and picturesque villages you will find an oasis of peace.

 

Check-in between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM

Your room will be ready from 15:00. However, you are welcome in the hotel before that. We will store your suitcases so that you can go cycling, visit museums or enjoy yourself in our restaurant on the day of arrival. Please notify is, if and when you arrive after 6:00 PM. An early check-in is also possible based on availability and for a surcharge of € 15.00 per room.

Castle Ruurlo More

Be inspired by the magic of Carel Willink and Kasteel Ruurlo

Between a varied and rich landscape, mystical atmosphere and idyllic places deep in the Achterhoek, lies Kasteel Ruurlo. Besides the fact that the castle is one of the most beautiful castles in the Netherlands, it has also been the setting for the work and life of great modern realistic artist Carel Willink since June 27 2017.

Carel Willink

Carel Willink is the cool grand master of neorealism. The work shows the development of a young, searching artist who experiments with abstract art to the painter with a technically perfect oeuvre.

Ruurlo Castle is located at Vordenseweg 2 in Ruurlo and is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Outdoor Activities in the Achterhoek

The Achterhoek region offers a diverse landscape of forests, hills, and old sand roads for the ultimate outdoor sports experience. There are hundreds of kilometers of challenging mountain biking and equestrian routes, recently upgraded for even better quality. The many unpaved roads make it perfect for gravel biking. Trail running takes you through a varied landscape of heathland, forests, and drifting sand, with some steep climbs up to 90 meters above sea level!

Start the MTB route from our parking lot. We offer free parking and bike services, such as a wash station, charging points, and a covered and secured bike storage area. After this beautiful route through the forests, you can enjoy a meal on our terrace or in the restaurant. With the MTB package, you also get a well-organized stay including breakfast, dinner, and a high wine/beer.

Cycling through the Achterhoek

Cycling past windmills, art, vineyards, or country estates – in the Achterhoek, the choice is yours! There are few places with as much variety as this region. It’s no surprise that the Dutch Cyclists’ Union named the Achterhoek the best cycling area in the Netherlands. Numerous beautiful cycling routes have been mapped out, leading you to surprising and scenic spots. You can follow the routes via the junction network.
